Form 3: 4th & 5th Grades

Cultivating Independence

Students in 4th and 5th grades are actively building a broad range of skills as they work toward independence in all areas. At Lorien Wood, our goal is to foster a sense of self-reliance and confidence in these important later elementary years.

Character Development

In Forms 2 and 3, students not only grow in independence but also begin to develop their leadership abilities. Our multi-age classrooms provide an ideal environment for students to take on new responsibilities and embrace the challenges of this stage, preparing them to navigate the growing pains of late elementary school with resilience and maturity.

Exploring Global Studies in a Christian Context

The Form Three classes are guided by a two-year Global Studies program that addresses what it means to be a Christ-follower in the vast and complex world. Students will understand their God-given mission and their role within the world as disciples of Christ. Through an integral approach of seeing the world, students will consider geography, sociology, history, art, music, literature, and other disciplines in a cohesive whole as they “explore God’s world and discover their place in it.”

 

Form 3 concepts rotate on a two-year cycle:

 
YEAR ONE — JESUS IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

This year is composed of the following units:
•  What is an Explorer? Shedding Light and Bringing Light
•  Exploring Civilizations: Central America and Mexico
•  Exploring Culture: South America
•  Exploring Ecosystems: Antarctica
•  Exploring Change: Oceania
•  Exploring Populations: Southern Asia
•  Exploring Commerce: East Asia
•  Exploring Home: North America

 
YEAR TWO —GO INTO ALL THE WORLD

This year is composed of the following units:
•  What is a Disciple? Creation and Paul’s Missionary Journeys
•  Disciple to the Middle East: Peace, As Far as it Depends on You
•  Disciple to Europe: Christmas Traditions
•  Disciple to Western Europe: Old and New
•  Disciple to Eastern Europe: Breaking Down Walls
•  Disciple to Africa: Abundance and Scarcity

Field Trips & Hands-On Experiences

Here are examples of the many field trips and in-school experiences that Form 3 students enjoy:

Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center:

At the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center, students embark on an enlightening journey into Omani culture, exploring its rich heritage and the intricate tapestry of peace and conflict in the Middle East. Immersed in the vibrant atmosphere, they learn the nuances of Omani customs and traditions, including the art of Arabic calligraphy.

The National Gallery of Art:

At the National Gallery of Art, students delve into the world of art, bridging the gap between the old and the new in Western Europe. After studying renowned European artists and their masterpieces in the classroom, they have the unique opportunity to encounter these works in person. With sketchbooks in hand, they practice sketching their favorite pieces, fostering a deeper appreciation for the rich artistic heritage of the region.

The Asian Market:

The Asian Market is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the vibrant cultures and economies of Far East Asia. Through hands-on experience, students explore the dynamics of business, production, and financial management as they create and sell an array of innovative products. With ingenuity and creativity, they develop unique items while gaining valuable insights into the principles of profit and loss.

Japanese Tea Ceremony: 

During the Japanese Tea Ceremony, students study the rich cultural traditions surrounding this formal ritual. They not only learn about the intricacies of the ceremony itself but also have the opportunity to savor traditional tea and delicacies, immersing themselves fully in the Far East Asian experience.

 

The Independent Readers Book List

Here at Lorien Wood, we seek to be a community of lifelong learners and readers in response to God’s call to love Him with all our mind. 

Form 3 students (ages 9-11) explore the world through our units and through the adventures they find in our stories. These book recommendations are made for students who have transitioned into the reading to learn stage. We hope these examples will cultivate lovers of reading that will lead to their own adventures as they explore God’s creation in both a literary sense and a realistic sense.
